TRUMP PROVED ME WRONG!

When Trump came on the political scene in 2016, I dismissed him as a mega egotistical political neophyte. From my perspective, even he was not serious about winning the presidency, but rather, his campaign was a continuation of a lifelong effort to gain riches by building the “Trump brand.”

Even though Trump’s campaign was at best haphazard, I gave him credit for being one of the greatest marketers and flimflammers in the country’s history, but I didn’t think he had even a huckster’s chance of winning. Trump proved me wrong.

Once in office, highlighted by his chaotic response to the Covid pandemic, Trump did everything he could to demonstrate that he was ignorant of, did not respect and was not qualified to effectively govern under a democratic political system. This point was underlined by his reaction to his loss in the 2020 election.

Once out of office and burdened by his actions before, during and after the January 6th insurrection, his indictment for security violations, his loss in a sexual abuse lawsuit and 34 count felony conviction for business fraud, I was certain that Trump would not run for President again, and if he did, there was no way he would win. And if he did win, I felt that Congress and the Judiciary would use their constitutional authority and moral obligation to put a governor on Trump’s dictatorial and undemocratic desires. Trump proved me wrong.

When Trump was elected again I didn’t believe his second term would be worse than his first. Trump proved me wrong.

After barely 100 days in office he has humbly declared “I run   the country and the world.” The number of “Executive Orders” issued by Trump would make any authoritarian dictator blush. Trump has used the phony claim that “we are at war” to make emergency declarations to throw world trade into chaos; ignore the constitutional concept of “due process” to deport migrants; he has disregarded, mocked and ridiculed the Judiciary; he has neutered the Congress; with equal verve he has attacked the law, media, colleges and the very culture of our country.

I could not conceive that Trump could do all this damage in his full term, let alone his first 100 days. Trump proved me wrong.

Despite all this, I am still optimistic that just as we have a history of surviving a bevy of existential threats to our culture, freedom and form of government, we will survive Trump. But I do have one overarching fear: That Trump will prove me wrong.
